Extra Vynil Fence? What to do with Vynil Fence Post?

Extra Vynil Fence? What to do with Vynil Fence Post?

In short, Turned them into Planters!

We built our vinyl fence about a year ago. After our contractor finished with our fence, he left these leftover posts.

Personally, I don’t like to throw away things. I thought about what I could and should do with these leftover Fence Posts. At that time, we were building our backyard and were in need of planters, so we decided to turn these Fence Posts into Planters/Pots.

This was the first set that we created. As you can see, the posts were cut into different sizes by our contractor. If you wonder, why it is because our house is located on a hill. The heights of the Posts range from 7” to 2’ tall. In my opinion, the different heights added uniqueness to the design.

For the shorter posts, it was easier to add soil and plants.  Afterward, they are good to go.

For Invasive plants, be careful to directly plant into the soil because they will grow huge!

The taller posts were a bit of a challenge. The top edges of the posts are 5”x5”, and the heights vary. We stuffed the inside of the posts with rocks to make them stand firmly and we buried them in the ground about 1”-2” deep. It has been 4  years and they are standing firmly. We live in Southern California where the Santa Ana Wind blows, so it can get very windy, but never get as bad as a hurricane or tornado. I highly doubt that these posts can survive the latter ones.

I found that the best pot to use for these fence posts is one from IKEA (by the way, they do not sponsor this blog post).  It’s a flower/plant pot called Bintje with 4.25” top diameter, and priced at $.79/each. The diameter of the pot fits perfectly inside the Fence Posts. All we had to do was drill a hole under the pot so the plant does not get overwatered during the rain.

Since we love to use what we have and don’t like to spend money, even when it is only $.79, we use what we have in the shed. These black pots that we got from buying plants at Home Depot or Lowe’s (they also don’t sponsor this blog post) work well too. The pots’ diameter is about 5”, therefore we had to push them through the top of the Fence Posts to make them fit into the posts.

Hope this helps! Be your creative self!
